Business Units

Northland's business units are organized by generating technologies – Offshore Wind, Onshore Renewables and Natural Gas – that are vital to our business. Aligned with our strategy and priorities, the business unit structure enables collaboration across operations, construction, finance and development and supports continuity, accountability and decision-making across the business.

2024 Feature Stories

Wildlife Protection

Wildlife Protection

Caring for the planet includes protecting the wildlife around us. At our Bluestone onshore wind farm in New York, six rotating bio-monitors operate during key times— beginning 30 minutes before sunrise and ending 30 minutes after sunset—to observe Bald and Golden eagles in the area. When an eagle is detected within a designated range, the nearby turbines are temporarily curtailed to ensure the bird's safety until it has moved out of the vicinity. In addition to identifying the eagle species, the bio-monitors record critical data such as the time of the sighting, whether the bird is an adult or juvenile, and its flight path. This information is then shared with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for further analysis.

Scotland Debate

Scotland Debate Sponsorship

We’re committed to fostering partnerships with local communities and Indigenous Peoples. In 2024, Deasbad, a well established and prestigious national debating competition in Scotland, celebrated its 25th anniversary. Northland was proud to sponsor the competition, which provides students across Scotland with a unique platform to showcase their proficiency in the Gaelic language. The competition culminated in a final debate held in the Scottish Parliamentary Chambers, where participants presented their arguments before distinguished guests including members of the Scottish Parliament.

HSE Contractor Awards

The health, safety and well-being of our people sit at the core of everything we do. In line with this commitment, we introduced the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Contractor Awards, designed to promote continuous improvement and reward and incentivize contractors who demonstrate exceptional commitment to HSE. These awards recognize contractors who go above and beyond, demonstrating exceptional safety culture, robust HSE management plans, compliance with HSE standards, and other critical performance metrics. Spanning numerous sites and facilities, the awards highlight excellence and set a benchmark for others to follow.

Pathways to Emission Reductions

Northland is committed to and focused on supporting the decarbonization of the global energy grid through operating a strong fleet of global energy assets, and constantly evaluating opportunities that align with current market needs, our strategic goals and a long-term vision for a clean energy future. Since 2019, we have reduced the carbon intensity of our operations by 30%, and progress continues as we work to reduce our emissions to
net zero by 2040.

Emissions Summary 2024

While Northland’s long-term trajectory is toward reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity and ultimately net zero emissions, our progress is not linear. For example, we currently have two offshore wind facilities under construction; these will meaningfully reduce our emissions intensity – but the results will not start to appear in our inventory until 2025 through 2027, when the facilities each become operational. Similarly, our natural gas plants provide essential stability to energy systems; their energy production and emissions will fluctuate from year to year, driven by supply and demand on the grid. Northland’s 2024 ESG Performance Index provides further details on emissions breakdowns and year-over-year fluctuations.
