TORONTO, Jan. 17, 2022 -- Northland Power Inc (“Northland” or the “Company) (TSX: NPI), a Canadian based global renewable energy company dedicated to supporting the clean energy transition, welcomes the outcome of the Crown Estate Scotland’s ScotWind offshore wind process. Northland’s applications have been successful and the company has been offered leases for zones N2 and N4 in the Northwest.

The application process was led by Northland’s Glasgow team, with support from the company’s international renewables expertise. Northland has engaged extensively with local communities from the beginning of the process, listening carefully to views from local authorities, politicians, community representatives and education establishments.

“Following a robust and highly competitive process, we are proud to have been selected as the preferred applicant for two offshore wind sites by Crown Estate Scotland and the Scottish Government. Both sites have substantial capacity to generate clean, green energy to support consumers and Scotland’s green energy ambitions. The opportunity to develop these leases aligns perfectly with our long-term growth strategy and our commitment to building a carbon free world.” – David Povall, Executive Vice President, Development at Northland Power

“As an international developer of renewable energy projects, we are drawn to Scotland for its rich natural resources and the opportunity to put down roots in some of the country’s most beautiful and entrepreneurial places. These are important investments for the communities where these sites are from. The social and economic benefits of offshore wind will be felt for generations and will be measured not only in terms of jobs – directly and via the supply chain – but more broadly in helping create greener and stronger economies and communities. Scotland has established policies that will be at the front of the energy transition and we are looking forward to supporting the country's ambitious journey to net-zero, getting back into the community and starting work to bring these important projects to life. “– Nigel Slater, Managing Director, Development - Europe at Northland Power

The company will now bring forward its development plans in line with the successful bid and will include accompanying supply chain commitments. An important first step will be the appointment of a Scotland-based supply chain and skills manager who will work with Scottish businesses and enterprise agencies. This builds on work done to-date by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in establishing a renewables-based supply chain to further develop local capabilities that can serve these projects long term.

With a build-to-own mindset from the beginning of any development, Northland takes a long-term view of its decision-making processes and will seek to reaffirm the strong relationships already established with communities and stakeholder representatives on the Western Isles and in the Northwest of Scotland.
